Who we are
Since its founding in 1961, the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation has promoted excellence and ethics in journalism. SDX is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization that supports the educational programs of the Society of Professional Journalists and serves the professional needs of journalists and students pursuing careers in journalism.

Liberty and self-government require a well-informed public. It is the responsibility of journalists to provide fair, balanced and accurate information in a comprehensive, timely and ethical manner.

SDX helps by:
— Advocating for open government
— Promoting integrity
— Encouraging excellence
— Fostering diversity
— Inspiring new generations of talented journalists
— Protecting freedom of speech and press

Through the years, SDX has created a legacy of worthwhile programs to achieve these aims, including:
— Pulliam/Kilgore Freedom of Information Internships
— Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writers
— Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award
— Diversity Toolbox/Rainbow Sourcebook

Contributions to the Foundation help support these and other programs:
SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference

The Ethics AdviceLine
Diversity Leadership Outreach Program
National Freedom of Information Coalition Annual Conference
Eugene C. Pulliam Editorial Writing Fellowship
Training on the Go newsroom training seminars
SPJ Narrative Writing Workshops

Announcing the winners of the 2010 Sigma Delta Chi Awards

The Society of Professional Journalists is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism. Judges chose the winners from over 1,400 entries in categories covering print, radio, television and online. The awards recognize outstanding work published or broadcast in 2010.

Click here to see a list of winners and view their work.

Dating back to 1932, the awards originally honored six individuals for contributions to journalism. The current program began in 1939, when the Society granted the first Distinguished Service Awards. The honors later became the Sigma Delta Chi Awards.

The awards banquet will take place Sept. 24 in New Orleans.

Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well- informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press.

SDX Chapter Scholarship Fund

Gifts to SPJ and local chapters are not considered charitable contributions and, thus, are not deductible. Only 501(c)(3) charitable organizations — like the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation — can offer donors a tax deduction. Recognizing this as an opportunity to add real value to the SPJ experience, the SDX Foundation board of directors is announcing a unique program to allow chapters to create their own special "account" within the foundation. Find out how your chapter can benefit.

SDX Foundation Development

You are invited to join the SDX Foundation in its work to improve and protect journalism. Your donation — large or small — can make a tremendous difference.

Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award

The Sigma Delta Chi Foundation presents the Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award to honor a person or persons who have fought to protect and preserve one or more of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Sigma Delta Chi Foundation Grants

Annually, the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation awards about $300,000 in grant monies. Most awards go to SPJ and SPJ-related projects to further align with the work of the Society. Other journalism-related projects that help to fulfill the Foundation's mission may receive support if funds are available.
